Is the Dyson Airwrap worth the price tag?

Is the Dyson Airwrap worth the price tag?

Now I don’t know about you, but I’ve wanted the Dyson Airwrap for a long time. Like a really long time. And last month I finally bit the bullet and brought one as soon as I saw it was back in stock. But at £450 it’s not a cheap hair tool. In fact, it’s the most expensive hair tool I’ve ever owned. But I was tempted by the promised great results. I mean, who doesn’t want salon-blowed dried hair every single day. Without having to actually step into a salon. Having owned this for a month now and used it pretty much daily. Let me share my thoughts on whether the Dyson Airwrap is worth the price tag. Because let’s be honest £450 is an astronomical amount to spend on hair tools.

Now I have to admit, as soon as I put a picture of the Airwrap on my Instagram stories, I was inundated with messages from people welcoming me to the Airwrap club. Telling me to buy the longer barrels and urging me to join the Facebook Support Group. Yes, that is a thing. It’s also an absolute lifesaver. Because one of the things I didn’t realise about the Airwrap, is that you have to unlearn everything you know about doing your hair. As you’ll be doing it differently with the Dyson. And that’s where the Facebook Support Group comes in handy.

Now I know what you might be thinking. How can it be that difficult or different to do your hair when using the Dyson Airwrap? But trust me it is! My hair usually holds a curl quite well when using a heated curling iron. I just add some texturising spray and hairspray the curls stay in for a good couple of days. Well, that approach didn’t work for me using the Airwrap.

I’ve found that using too much product after styling my hair with the Airwrap actually helps to make the curls drop and not last much longer than an hour or so. For me, the product needs to be applied before I style. Which has been a game-changer.

After watching numerous tutorial videos, both on the Dyson website, and on YouTube. As well as reading what products were working for other people. I think I’ve finally found what works for me.

So, what works for me? Well, it’s using a product before styling. I use the MilkShake whipped cream mouse on my hair when it’s damp. I then use the Soft smoothing brush to dry my hair to about 80% dry. This helps with adding volume to the root which is what I like.

I then go in with the 30mm barrels. Not the long ones, the regular ones. I did buy the long barrels in the 20, 30, and 40mm sizes. But I found that the 20mm just made my hair too curly. Think curly Sue curly. And although I liked the results of the 30 and 40mm long barrels, I have them in the regular size and didn’t think having them in the longer size warranted the £30 each set price tag.

Before I use the 30mm barrels though, I spritz my hair with the L’Oreal PII spray. This helps to add some dampness back into the hair but also means the curls stay in place. Hallelujah! I usually do my hair before bed, I don’t brush them out, I just sleep in them as is. Then in the morning I run my fingers through them and add a little oil to control the frizz.

My curls will then stay in place for the day. I do find by the next day, the curls have dropped but I’m left with what looks like second-day bouncy blow-dry. Which I’m not mad about. As my hair still has volume and shine.

So, is the Dyson Airwrap worth the hefty price tag? It is, and it isn’t. I don’t find that it has cut the amount of time spent doing my hair. I know people say that it’s drying as well as styling. But I find I can still spend up to 30 minutes doing my hair. But that’s when I’m curling it. If I’m just using the Soft Smoothing brush or the Round Volumising brush, then it’ll only take 10-15 minutes to do my hair.

I do love the fact that I’m using less heat on my hair. Since using the Dyson Airwrap I have found that my hair is in better condition. Although it is definitely frizzier than before. But I think that’s more down to my technique (or lack of) rather than Dyson’s fault.

All in all, I’m happy I’ve got the set. But it is an investment and I’ve probably still got some learning to do. This is crazy considering you pay such a huge amount of money on a product that you have to learn to do…on your hair! But that’s the Dyson Airwrap. You can find the Dyson Airwrap currently in stock on the Boots website. Just think of all the points you’ll get for buying it from Boots!
