Now I don’t know about you, but decorating and furnishing a home is hard work. A lot of planning and a lot of money can go into turning a house into a home. But I can’t deny that it’s also one of the most fun things to do. Back when I started turning my house into a home, I thought I knew exactly what I wanted. I’d been waiting for this moment for a LONG time, so I’d had a lot of time to think about what I wanted my place to look like. But over the course of my renovation things changed. Which is why I wanted to share with you all five things I’ve learnt from making my house a home.
GET INSPIRED
For me inspiration for my place came from a variety of places. From Magazines and Interior Blogs to Pinterest and Instagram, all of these gave me the much needed ideas and inspiration that I needed to turn my house into a home.

THINGS WILL CHANGE
Despite the fact that I was pretty set on exactly what I wanted, things can change. As an impulsive person, my style changed quite a bit as I was in the process of turning my house into a home. To begin with, I wanted a pink sofa. And then I decided to paint my walls pink, so the sofa went from pink to navy blue. In the end though, those changes have made my love my place a little more.

GIVE YOURSELF MORE TIME
I think one of key things I’ve learned about making my house a home is that it will ALWAYS take long than you think. I gave myself about a month to get everything done before I moved in, and even then that wasn’t enough time. And I was fortunate enough to be able to pay people to do the main bulk of my decorating. If you can give yourself more time, do, you won’t regret it.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY
As with most things, it will always cost more than you’ve budgeted for. For me, the bigger costs were the carpets, the curtains and the furniture, all of which costs far more than I had budgeted for.

SPLURGE OR SAVE?
Which brings me onto knowing what to spend your money on. And what to save your money on. For me, it didn’t make sense to splash out on Farrow & Ball paint, as lovely as that would have been! Instead I opted for Valspar paint which was so easy to use and I love the finish.
What have you learnt from making your house a home?

These are some great tips – I think time and money are a big thing. You need to plan to your budget, but also don’t be afraid to allow it to take time and do things little by little.
These are really fab tips, and you have a beautiful home! I have the same ladder/shelf and I love it!
I agree, there is always more that you can be doing around the home and it does take a while. But going in with a plan is a must
When I first moved into my flat as it was a new build I wasn’t able to decorate so it was all about the furniture for me, but we’re going to be buying a house in the next 18 months and I know that’s going to be an expensive time x
We’ve lived in our house for 6 years now and I still constantly change layouts or rooms! I think you’ve hit the nail on the head when it comes to spending and using slightly cheaper paints that still go a very good job.
Fab tips and we have lived in our house for almost 8yrs now and I occasionally get the urge to rearrange things – much to my Husband despair! But sometimes a simple reshuffle can make a WORLD of difference.
Your home looks lovely, I love all the little details in your decor. I used Valspar paint when I redecorated my office recently, it’s fab quality and better value than F&B!
I agree that things in your home change lots! I like to make changes because I always find new ways of improving how my house is set out 🙂 xx
Some really great tips here! I love the photos everything looks so lovely. Thankyou for sharing!
