Now I know we’re heading into the end of February, but it’s really not too late for 2021 to be a successful year when it comes to achieving your financial goals. I’m all about smarter money management. So if you want to accomplish your money objectives this year, here are my 5 steps for achieving your financial goals in 2021.
START WITH THE BASICS
Now the first step in achieving your financial goals is knowing what those goals are. Are you saving to buy a new home? Are you trying to clear credit card debt? Or are you saving for a rainy day and retirement? For me, I’m trying to end the year with a certain amount saved. So I take that number, divide by 12 and then commit to saving at least that amount per month. I find it a lot easier to set up a direct debit on payday, so the money is never in my current account for very long. That way, I’m way less tempted to save less each month.
KNOW WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES
After you’ve decided what your goals are for the year. You next need to know where your money goes. And if necessary, block any leakages. We all have them. The gym subscription you never use. Or the online streaming service that you don’t watch. Whatever it is. Go through your monthly expenses and see where you can save money. Knowing exactly what comes in and goes out of your account every single month will help with achieving your financial goals.
SHOP SMARTER
Now I don’t mean swapping out the expensive food luxuries for cheaper alternatives. Unless of course you want to. But if you’re going to spend money on something you need or want. Then you might as well shop the smartest way possible. Take a look online to see if there are any discount codes you can use. Or use a cashback site to get money back on your purchase. if you were going to buy it anyway, you might as well save money, or earn cashback where you can.
HAVE AN EMERGENCY FUND
Now while you’re working your way towards achieving your financial goals, don’t get side-tracked and forget about saving for a rainy day. Or as I like to call it. Topping up your emergency fund. Because we all need that emergency fund for when, you know, there actually is an emergency. I personally like to have six months’ worth of expenses saved away so that if something were to happen. I can continue to pay my mortgage for the next six months.
BE FLEXIBLE
And my final tip on achieving your financial goals in 2021, is to be flexible. Yes, it’s great to have goals. And have a plan of how you’re going to achieve those financial milestones. But if this past year has taught us anything, it’s to be prepared for the unexpected. And that means being flexible with your goals too. Unforeseen expenses can and will come up. But so can unforeseen opportunities.
So there you have it, my 5 steps for achieving your financial goals in 2021. Let me know in the comments below what your financial goals are for this year. And any other tips you want to share on how to achieve those goals.
