Now I don’t know about you. But at this time of year there is nothing better than heading out to a cosy country pub, to sit by the fire and enjoy a festive feast. Which is exactly what I did last week when I was invited down to the opening of the newly refurbished Red Lion Welwyn.
Now I have to start by saying that this is a pub I visited regularly. My friend Steph lives just down the road. And whenever we try to meet up for dinner, this is always top of our list. Mainly because the food is lovely, the atmosphere is great and we’ve never had a bad experience there. So when I was invited down to see the newly refurbished pub and enjoy a meal. I couldn’t resist.
To start with we headed over to the Gin Station to order a classic G&T and then pimp the drink with a variety of accompaniments. Including watermelon, pomegranates, strawberries, raspberries, passion fruit…. Honestly, my G&T has never tasted so good.
We then headed over to the table to order our starters and mains. We decided to go for the Artisan breads with olives to share, along with the King Prawn Gratin. Which is in a creamy garlic, white wine & leek sauce. Topped with panic breadcrumbs, Gran Moravia Cheese and toasted ciabatta.
For mains, I went for the 7oz Fillet Steak with twice-cooked chunky chips and peppercorn sauce. Plus a side of tenderstem broccoli, asparagus and green beans in a soy glaze. While my friend Steph went for the rack of lamb with chorizo, butternut puree, roasted shallots, dauphinoise potatoes, chime churri and red wine jus. Plus a side of Mac and Cheese.

Both the starts and the mains are delicious. As you would expect from the Red Lion. But of course there is always room for pudding right? Well Steph and I had couldn’t decided what to have so went for the next best option. Which is the House Sharer. Which included the home-baked chocolate brownie. The white chocolate and blackcurrant cheesecake tower. The Belgian chocolate and hazelnut mousse. And a Bourbon vanilla ice cream cookie sandwich.
I have to say, we both left the Red Lion feeling a lot fuller, but also in agreement that we couldn’t wait to go back and enjoy another meal. And some more cocktails.
