Now I think we can all agree that the preloved, or second-hand market for luxury goods is booming right now. With shops still closed in many parts of the world due to the pandemic, shopping brand new isn’t as easy as shopping preloved. Plus who wants to shop new, when you can shop more sustainably by buying second-hand. Now of course, like with most things there are good sides and downsides to this. So starting with the pros of buying preloved luxury…
PRICE
You can’t deny, that buying preloved can be a really affordable way to owning a luxury item. Whether that be shoes, accessories, leather goods or clothing. Buying these brand new is expensive. And not everyone’s budget can stretch that far. Which is why buying second-hand is affordable to many.
HARD TO FIND PIECES
But it’s not just price that draws in the crowds to the preloved market. It’s also because it’s often the only place that has hard to find pieces or discontinued products. There’s nothing worse than falling in love with an item only to find that even if you wanted to buy it brand new. You can’t, because it’s no longer stocked. Plus, if you’re after a vintage or collector’s piece, the only option is preloved.
AUTHENTICATION IS INCLUDED
If you’re shopping from a consignment store or a preloved website, they’ll guarantee that the product you’re purchasing is 100% authenticate. There’s nothing worse than finding the item you want, at a great price but not know if it’s the real deal or not. And that’s why these sites offer authenticating services as standard for added piece of mind.
CONSIGNMENT AND PRELOVED SITES ARE EVERYWHERE
Well, not literally everywhere. But there’s definitely more places to shop authenticate preloved luxury than ever before. Along with physical consignment shops, there is also websites, and Instagram shops that offer the preloved pieces you’re looking for. These can also be separated by brands. I follow a number of preloved sellers who only sell Mulberry.
And now moving onto the cons of buying preloved luxury…
PRICE
Despite the fact that being preloved can be seen as an affordable way to buy luxury items. You can also find the issue of people overcharging for an item. It could be that they’re not sure what the right market value should be. Or they could just be chancing their luck. Especially if the item you’re item is no longer available or always out of stock. Just make sure you do your research on how much you think the item should be. And how much you’re prepared to spend on it.
AUTHENTICITY
Now, despite most reputable online sellers guaranteeing authenticity. Some fakes are so good, that they’re hard to spot by even the most experienced authenticators. Some preloved items come with the receipt to let you know that the piece is genuine. However, if you’re buying vintage that can’t always be the case. My only advice in this area is to buy from a reputable site that guarantees authenticity or your money back.
NO BOX OR DUSTBAG
Now of course some items will come with these items. But sometimes they don’t It’s really not a big deal for most people. But if you’re someone who does love the packaging. Then this is worth bearing in mind when you shop preloved.
CONDITION
Nearly every preloved site you purchase from will be able to share the condition of the item they’re selling. And while these are usually always true and accurate descriptions. It’s worth bearing in mind that buying preloved, usually means buying an item that does show some signs of wear and tear. Whether those are hairline scratches on the leather. Or an item has lost it’s shape over time.
So these have been the pros and cons of buying preloved luxury. What are your thoughts on buying second-hand luxury? Have you ever done it? Would you be tempted?
