I think it’s fair to say most bloggers start their blogs using Blogger. I did. It’s one the biggest blogging platforms around and it’s very easy to use. Which is perfect if you’re entering the blogging world. But when I started to take my blog and blogging seriously, which was around the four month mark, I wanted to make the move to WordPress. So here is why I moved from Blogger to WordPress:
Creative freedom
When it comes to blogs on Blogger you’re pretty limited when it comes to design. With WordPress however you have creative freedom to build your blog to look exactly how you want it to look. You can either do it yourself using any one of the hundreds of themes to choose from, or completely customise your site.
Control and ownership
Being self-hosted on WordPress means that you have complete control over what is on your blog and most importantly you own your content. As Blogger is owned by Google, they have the power to delete your blog if they feel you’ve broken the guidelines. Although your hosting company also has the power to do that, their rules are far more flexible than Google’s.
SEO
Without getting to techy, although Blogger is owned by Google, which you would think would help in terms of SEO, WordPress sites actually preform better. Especially as you can download SEO plugins to optimise your blog’s SEO.
When I initially moved from Blogger to WordPress it was expensive. More expensive than I thought it would be. Being a novice when it comes to technology, I opted to pay someone to move my blog across and design my new blog. Along with this I also had to purchase my domain and pay a company to host my site for a yearly fee. So yes there are initial outlays to consider but there are so many perks of using WordPress. And despite what people may think, it’s incredibly easy to use. And if you need help, WordPress Support is full of threads and very knowledgeable people who will be able to resolve almost any issue.
Are you thinking of making the move from Blogger to WordPress? If you’ve already made the move, why did you choose to move?

Interesting post with some very valid points – I am on blogger and have been on three years. I love that it is fairly easy to use and I am able to do everything I want. I do think if you want a particular design or are more technically minded than me, WP is definitely the way to go x
Absolutely, you have so much creative freedom with WordPress but it does help if you understand how to use it x
I’ve heard a lot of people moving from one platform to the other. I myself have been looking into moving from Wix to WordPress and this post has deffo helped me understand some of the reasons to move. I think I’ll move after my year subscription runs out, otherwise I’m just wasting money that I don’t really have! Thanks for the tips xx
No problem, lad you found the post useful and good luck with the move x
I made the move from Blogger to WordPress last year with my main site and it is one of the best things I did. Whilst there is more to learn with WordPress there is also so much more you can do with your site.
I agree, moving from Blogger to WordPress was one of the best things I did as well x
Interesting. I am quite happy with blogger to be honest but I have thought would WordPress be better, but can’t be bothered with the stress of changing.
i started with blogger too and found it really easy to use, I was less impressed with its rigidity though and how small my images were however much I tried to make them bigger. I wasn’t convinced by WordPress though and all that plugin business so when I saw squarespace and all that was done for you I was sold. Best move I ever made x
I haven’t looked back since moving to WordPress! 🙂
I have been considering this. But, I wonder how to move a blog without loosing old readers. The blog address will be different and the domain name is different. Will people still be able to find me?
