Now I don’t know about you, but where has the year gone? If I thought 2020, the year that the pandemic started, went quick. Then I really wasn’t ready for how quickly the following year would go. Despite Covid still being a thing, and the pandemic still rearing it’s ugly head and ruining everyone’s plans. This year has been a remarkably quick one. And here we are, just 11 days left of 2021 and I turn 35.

Stephanie Merry 35

Now some people might fear approaching what is arguably the most mid point of your 30’s. Weirdly enough I feel anything but fear. Has my life turned out exactly how I thought it would at this milestone age? Of course not. But life and the universe have a funny way of changing what you think you want, into just what you need.

Stephanie Merry 35

Back when I was 18 and 35 seemed ancient, I thought by now I would be living in my forever home with my partner. I’m not sure I ever envisioned children in my future back then. But I definitely saw the big house, successful career and handsome husband by my side. The reality isn’t quite the same. But if the past 12 months have taught me anything, it’s that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

When I turned 34, I was only two months into a new job. I job that I only started because I was made redundant from a job I loved and hated in equal measure. Fast forward a year, and I’m again two months into a new job as I left the old one after being made an offer I really couldn’t turn down. I was headhunted! Which really doesn’t happen that often for me. But it made me realise that I need to have more confidence in what I do. My 18 year old self would be incredibly proud of the career I’ve got and the opportunities that have come my way.

That same 18 year old self would also be pretty impressed with my home too. It’s not a big house like I thought. But then I had no idea about mortgages and house prices when I was 18. Oh what a time to be alive! But my place is mine. This two bedroom flat was a pipe dream for a big part of my 20’s. I had no idea how I was going to be able to afford to buy a home, on my own, with my little salary. But I did. And I couldn’t be happier with my flat. Of course, I’d love the big house, but that might not be coming for a year or two yet.

So what about that handsome guy I thought I’d be married to by now? Well, another year has gone by, and I’m still happily single. Would I like to meet someone? Absolutely. Do I hate the dating apps? Absolutely. Am I still on them because at this point I have no idea how else I’d meet someone? Absolutely. I’m a big believer in fate, so I hope when the time is right, Mr Right will make an appearance.

Overall I have to say turning 35 feels good. Despite Covid ruining my plans for the second year running. Turning another year older feels exciting. My 20’s were great, but also tough at times. My 30’s have been the most exciting time so far. I brought my own place, I’ve travelled. I’ve grown my handbag collection (not important, but it makes me happy). And I’ve changed jobs more than I wanted to, but I finally feel settled in a company and career I can grow in. Life is good and there is so much to be thankful and grateful for. So here’s to turning 35!
