Afternoon tea Mad Hatter style

Well it was that time again, my mum and I descended into London town for Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea at the Sanders0n Hotel, another afternoon tea, where we enjoyed the delights from their Mad Hatters tea party.

The week before the tea, I went online to check out some reviews and was slightly nervous when not all the reviews were glowing, but I can say that I really couldn’t fault the Sanderson, their staff were all lovely and attentive and the food was absolutely delicious!

All the food comes out at once on the cake stand, at the top are the carrot meringues which are on a bed of pea shoots with marshmallow mushrooms; these were lovely and although I didn’t eat the pea shoots they were a nice touch!

On the middle tier you’ll find the most amazing melting mango cheesecakes, which were too die for. I’m quite a cheesecake connoisseur and truly believe the best cheesecake I’ve ever eaten is one that I make myself (modest I know), but I have to admit defeat – this melting mango cheesecake is just superb. You cut the cheesecake down the middle ensuring that the mango melts into the whole cheesecake and it really is a taste sensation like no other! The middle tier also has the Victoria sponges which are layered and have a clock iced on the top and the the chocolate tea cups which had a green tea and white chocolate mouse which was infused with popping candy. Now I’m not actually a fan of tea, but the mouse was delicious, I think the fact that it was mixed with chocolate and popping candy helped!

The lower tier was filled with the hand rolled sandwiches, which included smoked ham and mustard on a sun dried tomato bread, cream cheese and cucumber on a spinach bread, smoked salmon and lemon butter on a rye bread and egg mayonnaise with cress on a lemon bread – they were all as amazing as they sound. For the scones, we had maple syrup scones with jam and clotted cream and savoury ginger scones with a herb butter which was a lovely change from the traditional raisin scones. Plus we each had a mini vegetable quiche as well. With such a mix of sweet and savoury food, you also get a very cute and tasty palate cleanser in the form of a mini ‘drink me’ potion which contained a layer of passion fruit then coconut. And if that wasn’t enough food, you also get to go and sample some of their real fruit jellies in their jelly wonderland.

The experience at the Sanderson was impressive, the flavours worked well and complimented each other perfectly which made it one of the best afternoon teas I’ve been to. And the attention to detail just added to that, from the menu being inside a vintage book, to the sugar being fund in a jewellery box, it really was a mad hatters tea party.

Merry
