Dressing for the races

Merry Musing

Now I don’t know about you. But two words that can strike me with fear is occasion wear. Whether it’s for a wedding, a christening or dressing for the races – those two words can tip me into panic buying half of the high street. Plus forcing me into an over-enthusiastic online shopping binge. Because you know, ‘just in case’ I really can’t find anything to wear. Which is why I’m a big fan of those High Street shops that are able to cater for us all, no matter what the event.

Which is just as well. As this summer I’m off to do something that I really don’t get to do enough. I’m off to the races. Well Newmarket to be specific. To enjoy a day of horse racing, followed by a performance from George Ezra. Now while I wish my life was this exciting all the time, it really isn’t. These events happen quite few and far between. Which is why I was a little stuck on just what to wear when dressing for the races. It’s not everyday that you get to go to an event like this!

Merry Musing

Now if you’re not familiar with these kind of events at Newmarket, they’re known as Newmarket nights. And involve a day of horse racing, followed by a performance. In the past I’ve seen Razorlight, and Little Mix there. And this year you can see Craig David, Demi Lovato, and of course my personal favourite George Ezra. But of course, you still have the challenge of just want to wear when dressing for the races. As not only are you going to the races, you’re going to a gig too.

Which is why House of Fraser challenged me to pull together the perfect outfit for a day at the races. And it did feel like a bit of a challenge. I’m not ashamed to say, that sometimes I feel like I’m in a bit of a style rut. I probably wear the same 20% of my wardrobe, at least 80% of the time. But that’s normal right? Honestly though, I really shouldn’t have worried. The challenge was made all the more easier thanks to the House of Fraser dressing for the races section on their website. They also have a great occasion wear section, and general dresses section.

And with so many gorgeous pieces to choose from, it was hard to narrow it done to just one outfit. But as soon as I saw this gorgeous emerald green dress from Phase Eight. I knew it was the one for me. Not only is the colour beautiful, but the cut and shape suits me perfectly. The ribbon waistband emphasizes my waist, while the a-line pleated skirt skims over my hips. Now I have to admit, I don’t normally tend to wear such a dark colour in summer, but I couldn’t say no to the beautiful detailing and the fact that the length is just incredibly flattering.

So now that the dress was picked out. It was time to tackle the accessories. And in particular the shoes. Now, it can be tough finding the right pair of shoes for the races. Depending on which enclosure you’re in, can dictate what sort of shoe, and heel, you can wear. What you don’t want, is your stiletto heel sinking in the mud. Luckily for me, I know my time on grass will be minimal. Which is why I opted for these gorgeous metallic  sandals.

These are the Kedalisen Sandals from Aldo, and they might just be my new obsession. They’re glamorous, they’re glitzy and I know they’re the perfect race show for me. Especially as I plan on dancing the night away listening to George Ezra.

What do you think of this race day look? Are you heading to the races this year? How do you dress for the races.

As always thank you to Kaye for taking the pictures!

I love the colour of the dress. I don’t usually wear green, but that’s a really nice shade.
