How to feel festive when you’re not in the Christmas Spirit

Merry Christmas

Now I know I can’t be the only person who isn’t feeling remotely festive at the moment. We’re just over a week out from the big day. And it just feels like any other time of year to me. Well apart from the arctic weather conditions and darkness by 4pm. I’m sure the global pandemic has a lot to do with this. So these are my tips on how to feel festive when you’re not in the Christmas Spirit.

First up, lower those expectations. Christmas is ALWAYS better when your a child. The excitement, magic and festive spirit of Christmas cannot be replicated as an adult. Well, maybe it can if you’re a parent of a child going through all those emotions. But for the majority of us, it will NEVER be like when we were kids. So don’t be too hard on yourself for not feeling the same as you did when you were eight years old.

Merry Christmas

DO SOME FESTIVE BAKING

I don’t know about you, but there are certain things that I only ever bake at Christmas. They’re the same things I’ve been eating every year since I was a child. So whenever I bake them, I’m reminded of Christmas over the years. And it always helps me lift my mood and slowly get into the festive spirit.

WATCH CHRISTMAS MOVIES

As clichéd as it sounds. Watching Christmas movies is a quick way for me to feel more festive. I have the classic movies that I loved as a child, like Home Alone and Nightmare Before Christmas. Along with new favourites like Elf and Last Christmas. There’s just something so familiar and comfortable with watching the same films at the same time of the year.

Merry Christmas

LISTEN TO CHRISTMAS TUNES

Again, another cliché but I can’t help but feel more festive when listening to classic Christmas hits. Every year as a child we’d play them when decorating the Christmas tree. And it’s a tradition I still do today. It just lifts my spirits and gets me feeling festive while I’m singing along (badly) to All I want for Christmas is you.

BUY NEW DECORATIONS

I think one of the reasons I sometimes struggle to get into the festive spirit. Is that it doesn’t always feel that exciting to be putting up the same decorations every single year. Which is why I always like to buy new decorations for the tree and my place. It adds to the excitement of decorating for Christmas and helps get me in the festive spirit.

Merry Christmas

START A NEW TRADITION

Christmas is all about tradition. But they can get boring and not that exciting if you do them year in year out. So why not let this year be the first year that you start a new tradition. Maybe it’s a pre-Christmas get together with friends. Or only doing funny secret Santa gifts with you family. Whatever it is, it’ll help you get into the festive spirit this year, and next.

So there you have it. My tips on how to feel festive when you’re really not in the Christmas Spirit. Let me know in the comments below whether you’re feeling festive yet. Or what you’re doing to get into the Christmas Spirit.

I have been feeling a bit meh about Christmas even with the decorations up but I am hoping that as soon as my youngest finishes school I can find my Christmas spirit. We’re making our gingerbread houses this afternoon and we might even watch a Christmas film x
