Seven mantras I'm living by in 2017

January may be the start of a New Year. But I decided on New Year’s Eve that this year was going to be different. New Year, New Rules. And part of those New Rules is learning to think differently. Live for myself more. Stop worrying so much about other people. And stop trying to please people. I’m currently reading Sarah Knight’s ‘The life-changing magic of not giving a F**K’. And it is honestly life-changing! Like so many others, I spend far too much time trying to please everyone else. All the while feeling like no-one is trying to be please. And it’s time to change. New Year, New Rules remember? So here are the seven mantras I’m living by in 2017.

Don’t hold yourself back

Something I think we can all relate to is not achieving what we want to because of fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of failing. But it’s too easy to talk ourselves out of something. And putting ourselves down because we don’t believe we can do it. There are always going to circumstances that interfere with our hopes and dreams that we can often deal with but tackling your own self-doubt and worry is always incredibly difficult.

Don’t love anything that cant’ love you back

Pretty obvious right? But such a good mantra to live by. Love is such a precious a thing and something that shouldn’t be thrown around. And certainly not to anything or anyone or can’t love you back.

Chuck it in the f**k it bucket and move on

This is inspired by Sarah Knight’s book. You have a certain amount of f**k’s to give out a day. So if you can’t change something, then move on. What’s the point in worrying, over analyzing and just generally driving yourself crazy about something you can’t control?

Today is the oldest you’ve ever been and the youngest you’ll ever be again

I love the quote. It’s a great reminder to live in the now. Stop worrying about what will happen in the future. Or fret over what happened in the past. Live in the moment and really enjoy it. Appreciate the present and stop wishing away the time.

Worrying is a poor use of the imagination

It’s so true. Our imaginations are beautiful things that shouldn’t be wasted on circumstances we’ve probably made up in our own heads. Just think of your imaginations potential if you were putting it to good use.

Choose happiness

It’s taken me a long time to realise this. The only person who is in charge of my happiness is me. And it’s exhausting living a life that isn’t happy. Putting your happiness into the hands of someone else will just result in you being let down. It’s far better to focus on you. Discover what makes you happy. What gives you enjoyment. Yes friends and loved ones add to your happiness. But they’re not solely responsible for it.

Invest in people who invest in you

I’m sure we’ve all done this at some point. Whether it be in a friendship or relationship. But only invest your time, energy and heart into those that invest in you. Anything one-sided isn’t healthy and it’s exhausting. Plus it normally results in you feeling let down and upset. And where’s the fun in that? It’ll be hard but in the long run it’s worth saying goodbye to those who don’t invest in you and instead focus your energy on improving your self-worth and happiness.

What mantras are you living by in 2017?

Choosing happiness is so important. I’m trying to live by that mantra this year. I also like ‘act like the person you want to be’.
Never heard “Chuck it in the f**k it bucket and move on” but I think that’s good advice.

This sounds like an amazing book to read and I just love this post, so many good little nuggets in here. “Today is the oldest you have ever been and the youngest you will ever be again”, that really stopped me in my tracks when I read that. I also loved the “Chuck it in the f*ck bucket and move on”, excellent advice to live by x

Some important mantras that live by and not just for 2017. e are definitely in charge of our own happiness. As a kid, i used to get upset when others are down and it’s not fun way to live. You can’t rely on others to make you happy either – rely on friends to hang out all the time, partners to support you at events etc x

These are great mantras especially the final one, invest in people who invest in you. For too long I’ve always been the one to make effort with specific friends etc and never have them put the effort back in x
