Why you need to stop comparing yourself to others right now

*This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission, at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link!*

I don’t know about everyone else. But I have a love hate relationship with social media. One the one hand I love how you can connect with someone you might never had had the chance to meet before. Find people out there who share your interests. And how it can make you feel close to people who are geographically miles away. But on the other hand, there is a downside to social media too. And for me that is being able to go from feeling a fantastic 10 to a lowly 3 in a split second by logging into my Instagram, Twitter or Facebook app.

Now don’t get my wrong. If it wasn’t for social media, I doubt many people would be reading this blog. I also wouldn’t be in the job I’m in. But one of the things I find myself really struggling with is feeling inadequate every time I open a social media app to see someone’s ‘perfect’ life staring back at me. A life that makes mine feel massively inadequate.

And why do I care? Well I care because my life isn’t perfect. And I’m guilty of constantly comparing myself to other people. But as you may have seen on my Instagram recently. I’m trying to change. I’m trying to be a more positive person. And I’m trying to always remind myself that comparing your chapter 1, to someone else’s chapter 23 doesn’t help anyone. It really doesn’t. And here us why you need to stop comparing yourself to others right now.

  • Comparisons are always unfair. As humans we typically compare the worst we know of ourselves to the best we presume about others.
  • You have nothing to gain from a comparison, but so much to lose. Like your pride, dignity, drive and passion.
  • Comparisons focus on the wrong person. You’re only in control one life. Yours. By comparing our lives to someone else’s, we’re wasting energy focusing on our own.
  • You’re just wasting precious time by comparing yourself. I don’t know about everyone else but I need more hours in the day. And spending just one second a day comparing myself to someone else is wasting one second too many.
  • You’re too unique to compare. And that’s the best thing about you!

So next time you log onto social media and start to feel inadequate comparing yourself to those you see on there. Just remember you don’t need to compare your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 23. Instead be motivated to make the changes you want to make to your life. Or relax and feel content with the amount of good things you have going on in your life!

As always thank you to Kaye for taking these pictures!

Great post! I am so guilty of this all the time. I keep having to remind myself that we all go at different paces and have different journeys. I am really trying to focus on myself and my family right now and making sure I’m happy and healthy.

I went through a stage of hating blogging when I was comparing myself to others. One day it just clicked and I did what I wanted on my blog, and I’ve been happy with it ever since!

    I love your sunglasses 🙂

Great post. I’m guilty of comparing. I do it all the time. I find myself doing it most at the gym. I’m trying to not be like that, it’s hard work.

Fantastic post! I am guilty of this too especially when I see blog stats and wonder why mine just isn’t growing. Then I remember it’s only 2 years old and it a journey! We need to be kinder to ourselves xx

This is such a great post! I hate comparing myself to other bloggers but it just doesn’t fit well with me that I have been on with my blog for such a long time and other newbie bloggers gain hundreds of other followers in a few weeks!

Its really hard not to but it is so important to not compare- you never know what someone else is going through or has been through to get to that point in their life. I always think, my time will come! xxx

Great post!! I am learning day by day to love myself more and more even with my flaws and if someone can’t love me for how I am then they don’t deserve to be in my oife, take things in strides one day at a time look in the mirror each day and tell yourself your beautifully and wonderfully made no matter what others look like you are you and there is no one else like you, tell yourself those things daily in the mirror and it will help to boost not only your confidence but your self esteem

I feel like this is so much easier said than done, I’m always comparing me and my life to others and at times I do feel inadequate. I don’t live an exciting life like you see on Instagram, but it’s really important to remember that we only see snippets x
