Like most people I started the New Year with good intentions. I wanted to increase my fitness and start running. The only problem was that I hadn’t run for years, well except for the odd train or bus, I really kept running to a minimum. So deciding I wanted to start running wasn’t going to be an easy challenge which is why I knew I needed help. I just didn’t realise the help would come in the form of a free app.
The Couch to 5K app is perfect for those like me who perhaps haven’t run in a long time and need to build up their fitness. It’s split into a nine week programme that helps you build stamina so that at the end of week nine – you’re running for 5k. So what did I learn having completed the nine week challenge?
- Never underestimate the power that new workout clothes have. I’m much more likely to look forward to my run or gym session if I’m in a new pair of leggings or sports top.
- Just because I’m exercising doesn’t mean I can eat rubbish – eating the right food is just as important as training in the gym.
- A good pair of trainers is EVERYTHING.
- Some runs will be harder than others for no apparent reason.
- Starting is the hardest part but always remind yourself of how far you’ve come.
- Don’t compare your fitness journey without anyone else’s. You’re only in competition with yourself and as long as your’re running, you’re winning.
- Just keep running, if you miss a day, go tomorrow, if you miss a week just start where you left off the next week, just don’t give up.
- Have patience. Unfortunately doing two weeks worth of running doesn’t turn you into a super fit goddess but keep going and you’ll get there.
- When you’re bored of running, mix it up – do weights, do Pilates, go to an exercise class.
- Exercise is more than a physical workout – it’s also a mental one too.
Have you tried the couch to 5k?

I’ve heard of this app before but never imagined it actually being a useful tool to get me motivated! Do you still think you’ll carry on running now that the programme has finished?
I still run now even though I completed it, I’ve finally found a passion for running x
I’m currently using the Get Running app for the third time (I reach the end of it and then stop running for some strange reason) and it’s incredible. I used to absolutely hate running but now I’m itching to go for a run. New workout clothes definitely help and the healthy eating has started to come into play for me too.
Not heard of that app before but I loved using the couch to 5k one x
I’ve never heard of this app, I love the idea of it though!! I’m so lazy, I do walk a lot and do 2 hour walks with the dog every day but I don’t know if I could run haha! Good on you for doing the 9 week challenge, are you a more confident runner now?
I’m so much more confident will running now than I used to be – I love it! x
I know so many people who take great pleasure in running, but it is so not me!
I used to be like that but now I get it! x
This sounds like a really good app! Going to pass this one on to my boyfriend- he’s signed himself up for a few 5 and 10k runs this summer x

Hope he does well in the races! x
Interesting! I have downloaded the app after reading this as I desperately want to get out there and run.
I am finding it super hard to motivate myself to just get out though, what if someone seas me struggling! ha!
Well done though, could you run a 5K now? Did you do it on your own or did you have a buddy to motivate you to go out and do it.
Love to hear from you!

Don’t worry about anyone else, you’re already ahead of everyone else who is choosing to do no exercise! I can now run 5k which is something I never thought I could do! x
Just this week I’ve heard of this app. It’s good how it’s encouraging people and it’s split up in programmes will ease your body into it but also give you some great benefits. x
It really is great and perfect for beginners x
