Ok so after the success of last week’s lockdown love diaries, I thought I’d come back with part two. So let’s rewind to July. I’m back on Tinder and I match with a slightly older guy. Let’s call him Warren. Now again, Warren seemed like a nice guy. He looked friendly and cute in his pictures, he had a fun job working with kids. And although he didn’t live in the same town, he was only 30 minutes away.
Now we started talking almost as soon as we matched. And again, it was pretty consistent with the back and forth messaging. And it didn’t take long before we’d moved from texting to phone calls. Now he had a sexy voice. He sounded like he was an Essex geezer. Which I quite like.
Anyway, we continue to text. We continue to talk on the phone. And as the pubs are back open (hurrah!). We agree to meet for an in person date. The only downside is that he doesn’t drive. So I drove to him to pick him up for our drink. Now I’m not one to judge, but not driving is a bit of a pet peeve of him. And it wasn’t that Warren hadn’t learned to drive. Oh no, it was that Warren was currently banned from driving due to drink driving.
Now I know what you might be thinking. And yes, it was probably at this moment that I should have walked away. But I didn’t. He was cute, he was sweet, and he seemed truly remorseful about the fact that he was so stupid to drink drive. So I ignored it this red flag.
Now the first date goes well. Like really well. So well in fact that we have a second date planned for two days later. That date also goes well. So we arrange a third. And that’s when things go downhill…
Now let me just say that on these dates there were some red flags I chose to ignore. Because I seem to go colour-blind when I’m dating someone I like. But the main one was that I’m the first woman he’s dated in their 30’s. Ladies and gentleman, Warren was 38. 38! And he’d never dated someone in their 30’s…
So date three ends. I drop him off. Because, you know, he can’t drive. I haven’t even reached the motorway before he starts sending me messages. And not just one or two messages. He’s sending me a barrage of messages.
Now my car, reads the messages out to me. And it hasn’t even finished reading the first one out before another three or four have come in. Now in my naivety, I thought these messages might be cute ones letting me know how much he’s enjoyed the date etc.
Oh no. These are messages telling me what’s wrong with me…
Firstly, he didn’t appreciate the fact that I was checking out the guy behind him during our whole dinner. Now readers, just know that I don’t think I could have picked out who was sitting behind him in a line-up. Because I don’t remember who was sitting behind him. And I definitely wasn’t checking them out.
Secondly, I had mentioned that my day had been quite quiet and that my boss (who happens to be male), had called me for a catch up chat. But as it was so quiet at work, we ended up instead talking about what we’d done that weekend.
And Warren didn’t like that. Firstly he had a problem with that fact that it was a video chat. It was July folks, all my work calls were video chats! And secondly, he thought that my male boss *must* be in love with me because why else would a guy in his 40’s call me up to have a chat? To him it was irrelevant that this guy was my boss.
And thirdly, during our date he’d asked me if I’d ever dated a black guy. I told him, I hadn’t. For no other reason other than I haven’t. But that if I met someone, who I clicked with, whose company I enjoyed and found them attractive, then I’d date them. Regardless of their skin colour, culture, background etc. You know, like a normal person.
Well again, Warren didn’t like. He said he couldn’t be with someone who was open to dating black guys… Yes, you read that right. In 2020, I managed to find myself a racist psycho to have three dates with.
Needless to say, there was no fourth date. Although, he did try and brush all of these things off with the tag line of ‘I’m just being honest, don’t you want me to be honest?’. I do want guys to be honest with me. But I also want guys to not be racist psychopaths. Is that too much to ask?
